Join us at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3 for a parking lot movie night featuring the 2002 award-winning film Whale Rider. On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs, always the first-born, always male, have been considered Paikea’s direct descendants. But 11-year-old Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes) believes she is destined to be the new chief. Written and directed by Niki Caro, Whale Rider is a contemporary story of love, tradition, rejection, and triumph. The movie is rated PG-13 and runs 1 hour and 41 minutes.
This family-friendly event will take place in the parking lot at our temporary location (6900 Delmar Blvd) and is free and open to all.
